History & Character
Tumbler Ridge has deep roots in coal mining and is internationally recognized for its significant dinosaur fossil discoveries, many of which are showcased locally. The area blends natural wonder with a strong sense of community pride.
Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark
The Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark is the first UNESCO Global Geopark in western North America. Its natural features span millions of years of geological history, including Pleistocene deposits and part of the Triassic Pangea shoreline. This is complemented by palaeontological phenomena, including Cretaceous dinosaur tracks, a bone bed with unusual features, and Triassic fish and marine reptiles. The Dinosaur Discovery Gallery in Tumbler Ridge is a major attraction, while hiking trails lead to geosites like waterfalls, dinosaur tracks, mountain summits, sedimentary rock formations, caves, and canyons.
A Day in the Life:
Practicing in Tumbler Ridge
"My name is Ife Akanegbu, a family physician and writer. Six years ago, I arrived in Tumbler Ridge, unaware of the deep connection I’d form with this place. The kindness of the people, the breathtaking landscapes, and the simple, fulfilling life have made it my home.
Tumbler Ridge is an adventurer’s paradise—hiking, fishing, camping—always something to explore. No city traffic, just one four-way stop. Everything is within reach, making life refreshingly simple.
Our Health Centre integrates the emergency room and clinic, fostering strong teamwork. Rural doctors are well-supported with virtual assistance and seamless patient transfers.
For emergencies, air transport ensures timely care, reinforcing our commitment to quality healthcare.
The town boasts a rich history, home to a fascinating fossil museum—an attraction for science enthusiasts.
As a writer, I find endless inspiration in Tumbler Ridge. A supportive community of fellow writers encourages my storytelling, especially on mental health. I even discovered a love for gardening here. Planting and harvesting my own food is an incredibly fulfilling experience. The camaraderie among doctors here is unmatched. We support one another, making our work both meaningful and enjoyable.
Weekends take us to nearby towns like Dawson Creek and Fort St. John for a change of pace. Sometimes, we even take shifts in their emergency departments.
Some places stay with you forever. Tumbler Ridge isn’t just where I live—it’s where I thrive.
Tumbler Ridge – A Community Like No Other."
