A Day in the Life:

Practicing in Chetwynd

“…And so, it is February, I wake up 6.30 am to a breathtaking sunrise over snow covered fields. The frost ground stays still, but my treadmill will start moving with the press of the button. Following a few miles of a wake up running routine and rewarded with a delicious cup of coffee shortly after, I am ready for my day. Living in a small northern town is never routine and every day brings something new. Every morning, I greet my patients by their names, checking on a recovering heart patient and a young boy bouncing back from pneumonia. One of the best parts of rural medicine is my close relationship with my patients and an amazing team of nurses I get to work with. Shortly after my hospital rounds it is time for a beautiful drive to a First Nation reserve. I am about to enjoy peace in my heart of the calm surroundings. As I arrive shortly after 9 am, I am greeted at the door by my favorite band member at the health center who will fill me with energy and joy for the rest of my clinical day. …And so, it is… I am not a general practitioner but rather I am a family medicine specialist. I will bring health back to anyone who comes in and asks for help in a very special way. I am a specialist at everything and anything and I will forever enjoy the immense scope of my specialty. Sure, my days are full, but so is my heart. As I do feel I am more than just a doctor, I am a trusted friend, a problem solver and a valued member of my community. Would I ever trade it for anything else? No.”
